One of the babies is still in a serious condition.
On September 14, Chinese dairy giant Sanlu admitted that its baby food had been contaminated with melamine, a chemical that can cause severe kidney damage. Following the announcement, approximately 53,000 children under the age of four were diagnosed with kidney damage, and at least four of them subsequently died.
A total of 50,741 melamine-affected children have already been discharged from hospitals, the health ministry said.
Nationwide checks revealed the presence of melamine in at least 22 brands of milk products, as well as in eggs, other non-dairy products, and animal feed.
Meanwhile, AP says the death toll in the melamine scandal could be higher than Chinese officials report, and at least five more children may have died due to melamine-tainted milk.
