KABUL, November 17 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 38 Taliban militants have been killed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, an Afghan Defense Ministry source said on Monday.

The militants were killed in a joint operation overnight Saturday by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghanistan's national army.

Clashes between militants and NATO-led coalition forces intensified in Afghanistan over the weekend.

A British ISAF soldier was killed when his vehicle exploded in Helmand province on Saturday.

According to law enforcement sources, the U.S. Bagram Air Base came under rocket attack on Sunday, but no damage or casualties were reported. Afghani militants have also fired projectiles at several administrative buildings in the southeastern province of Ghazni. Again, no one was killed or injured in the attack.

The same day NATO planes carried out airstrikes in the central Wardak province, killing 12 militants. According to a NATO spokesman in Kabul, the attack targeted the forces of Taliban warlord Jalaluddin Haqqani.
