MOSCOW, November 1 (RIA Novosti) - Zenit St. Petersburg beat Moscow Region side Khimki 1-0 on Saturday to maintain their bid for a 2009/10 Champions League place.

A goal in the 16th minute by record club signing, Portuguese international Danny, was enough to give Zenit their first win in three league matches.

Earlier in the day, Spartak Moscow beat CSKA Moscow 1-0 in their first victory over their deadly rivals for seven years. The result means that Rubin FC, from Russia's republic of Tatarstan, are just one win away from their first ever title.

In the 2009/10 season, for the first time, the top three teams in the Russian Premier League will qualify for the Champions League. The top two clubs will go into the group stages, with the third-placed team starting in the second qualifying round. The fourth- and fifth-placed teams will enter the UEFA Cup, while the bottom two sides are relegated.

The Russian season runs from March to November.
