ATHENS, October 31 (RIA Novosti) - Greek Cypriot President Demetris Christofias will pay a three-day visit to Moscow on November 18, a spokesman for the government in Nicosia said on Friday.

"This visit is very important considering, first of all, the high level of relations between Cyprus and Russia, and the role Russia plays on the international political arena," the spokesman said.

During the visit, Christofias is due to discuss political, economic, trade, tourism and cultural ties between the countries.

"I am convinced that the official visit of the president to Russia will give a new impetus to our relations," the spokesman said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the north in response to a military coup on the island that was backed by Athens. The Turkish Cypriot state is recognized only by Turkey.

Russia, which holds a UN Security Council seat, favors a solution to the Cypriot problem based on a two community federation. Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are currently carrying out talks on the island's reunification.
