MOSCOW, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - Police posts in South Ossetia came under fire from the nearby Georgian village of Nikozi on Saturday, the republic's interior ministry said.

No one was injured in the incident.

"Law enforcement positions of the republic of South Ossetia near the Georgian village of Nikozi were shot at this morning with machine guns and other firearms. This happened while South Ossetian positions were being set up in border zones," Mikhail Mindzayev was quoted on the ministry's website as saying.

Russia recognized South Ossetia along with Abkhazia as independent states on August 26, two weeks after it forced out Georgian troops that had tried to retake control of South Ossetia. Tensions remain high in the region, and Georgia continues to demand that Russia withdraw its troops from the two republics.
