MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - An international donor conference to raise funds to help rebuild Georgia's damaged infrastructure following a five-day conflict will be held in Brussels on October 22, the European Commission said on Thursday.

The conference is being organized by the EU backed by France, which holds the rotating presidency, and the World Bank, a European Union spokesman said.

"The purpose of the conference is to mobilize a critical mass of external assistance to support the country in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, reintegration of internally displaced people and in accelerating Georgia's recovery from the impact of the August 2008 conflict on its economy," the European Commission said on its website.

The conference will be attended by EU member states, as well as other countries and international organizations ready to provide financial aid to Georgia. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and Georgia's Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze will address the conference.

A joint World Bank and UN assessment said that Georgia will require around $3.4 billion over the next three years to support the economy, public sector and infrastructure development.

At a September summit, EU leaders pledged to contribute around $715 million between 2008 and 2010 for Georgia's restoration.

Russia and Georgia fought a brief war in August after Georgia launched a military offensive against South Ossetia in an attempt to regain control over the republic, which split from Georgia in the early 1990s.
