MOSCOW, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - Swedish auto giant Volvo said on Thursday car sales in Russia in the first nine months of this year increased by 13% against the same period last year, totaling 16,000 vehicles.

"The increase of 13% against the backdrop of the falling global sales is a very positive result," the company said in a statement.

The company said that the increase was largely down to dynamic sales of off-road and SUVs vehicles.

Over the given period Volvo has sold in Russia 5,400 XC90 off-road vehicles, which is a 34.2% year-on-year increase, and 2,400 XC-70 SUVs - a 14.8% increase against the same period in 2007.

At the beginning of the year Volvo Car Russia President David Thomas announced that the Swedish auto giant intended to boost car sales in Russia by 42.3% year-on-year in 2008 to 30,000 vehicles.

The company's sales in Russia in 2007 grew by 95.1% year-on-year to more than 21,000 cars.
