UNITED NATIONS, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - The UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution on Saturday, reaffirming demands for Iran to halt uranium enrichment but imposing no new sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

The five permanent UN Security Council members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - and Germany, which are negotiating the Iranian nuclear problem, agreed on Friday on the text of the resolution on Tehran containing no new sanctions.

The resolution passed by the UN Security Council calls on Iran "to comply fully and without delay with its obligations" under previous council resolutions and cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said that the new UN Security Council resolution was prepared in a way to avoid a military option in the dispute with Tehran. He said the new text reaffirmed previous resolutions that "avoid any possibility of encouraging or contemplating a military solution to the Iranian nuclear problem."
