Georgia has officially notified Russia of its decision to sever diplomatic relations, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
TBILISI/ MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia has officially notified Russia of its decision to sever diplomatic relations, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

Georgia had announced the move last Friday in response to Russia's recognition on August 26 of the breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent countries.

"Russian Embassy Minister-Counselor Andrei Smaga was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to receive notification of the severance of diplomatic relations," a ministry spokesman said.

Russia's ambassador to Tbilisi confirmed over the phone that Russia has received the notification.

"The cutting of diplomatic relations envisions the closure of the diplomatic mission" in Georgia, Vyacheslav Kovalenko said.

Smaga said the decision was another mistake made by Tbilisi, which will in no way help rectify existing problems.

He said the Russian Embassy in Georgia will cease to work on September 3, but that no decision has yet been made on when the embassy staff and their families should leave Georgia.
