KIEV, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - Floods triggered by heavy rains in Western Ukraine have resulted in $80 million in losses to the country's agricultural sector, Deputy Agriculture Minister Serhiy Melnyk said on Tuesday.( Floods kill over 20 in western Ukraine- foto

"According to preliminary assessments, the losses amount to over 400 million hryvnas [$80 million]" the official said.

The country's agriculture ministry has already set up a working group to monitor the affected areas and defined a set of measures to aid local farmers.

However, as the disaster did not affect the country's main grain-producing regions, the ministry will not revise its nationwide grain harvest forecast of at least 40 million metric tons.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko declared on Monday a three-month state of emergency in western Ukraine, where 22 people, including six children, have been killed by floods in the past week.

More than 40,000 homes have been flooded and thousands of people evacuated as a result, according to the Ukrainian emergencies ministry.
