BUENOS AIRES, July 8 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 47 people have been killed and a dozen more injured as a truck carrying some 60 passengers plunged down a cliff in west Bolivia, the country's Erbol radio station reported on Wednesday.

The death toll includes 12 children. The injured have been taken to hospital, and one of them is in a serious condition.

The accident occurred on a mountainous road the town of Potosi, south of the capital La Paz. The driver is thought to have lost control of his vehicle before the truck fell 200 meters (650 feet) into a ravine.

Erbol radio reported that the passengers, "were sitting on top of their loads, which crushed them when the truck fell."

For many poor Bolivian villagers, trucks are the only form of affordable transport. Two similar accidents killed a total of 37 people in June.

Over 1000 people were killed and 13,500 injured in road accidents in Bolivia last year, according to official statistics.
