ROSTOV-ON-DON, July 7 (RIA Novosti) - A fisherman in southern Russia's Stavropol Territory rescued a 13-year-old girl from a river at the weekend, before being caught by the current and drowning, local authorities said on Monday.

Sergei Ivannikov, 24, was fishing on the Kuma River, when he heard the young girl's cries for help.

"Without thinking about himself he went straight to her assistance," a local authority statement said.

After diving into the river he managed to drag the girl to her parents near the riverbank, but was then caught in the river's strong current and dragged into deeper water where he drowned.

The man's body was found by divers later that day.

Following the incident, a further warning was issued to locals and visitors in the area to only swim in designated bathing areas, where life-saving services are provided.
