ABU-DHABI, June 26 (RIA Novosti) - Five of the Bahraini sextuplets who were born last Sunday have died, the Dubai Newspaper Gulf News reported on Thursday.

The sixth baby is currently in a critical condition in a neo-natal intensive care unit at a clinic in the country's capital, Manama.

The sextuplets, three boys and three girls, weighing between 460 and 650 grams, were delivered prematurely after 24 weeks of pregnancy by caesarean section, with 35 minutes between the first and last baby.

A source in the Bahraini Health Ministry told the newspaper that three of the babies died on Monday night, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday.

Their mother, a 35-year-old teacher, had undergone in-vitro fertilization procedure, with four eggs implanted in her womb, two of which later divided. Doctors advised her to remove some of the embryos to give the others a better chance of survival, but she refused, citing religious beliefs.

The sextuplets are the second such reported case in Bahrain, where six babies, four boys and two girls, were delivered by caesarean section in 2001. Three of them survived.
