MOSCOW, June 14 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson said Saturday that a terrorist act against Russian railroad troops, carrying out track repairs in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, had been prevented.

"An attempt to carry out a terrorist act on June 13 along a section of the Tamysh-Ochamchira track was made against railroad troops," Colonel Aleksander Drobyshevsky said.

According to Drobyshevsky, a mine had been placed under rail tracks, where Russian railroad troops were working.

"The anti-tank mine was armed," Drobyshevsky said.

Bomb disposal experts, who diffused the explosive, said the mine had been placed under the track around 10-30 days earlier.

Around 300 Russian railroad troops arrived in the self-proclaimed republic on May 31 as part of a Moscow humanitarian assistance initiative for Abkhazia. The deployment met a furious reaction from Georgia, which accused Moscow of preparing for military intervention.

Relations between Russia and its ex-Soviet ally have deteriorated greatly in recent years over Moscow's support for Abkhazia and South Ossetia, another separatist region in Georgia, and Tbilisi's drive for NATO membership.
