Russia suspends Turkish agricultural imports from June 7

MOSCOW, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor will suspend imports of Turkish agricultural produce from June 7 after high levels of chemical fertilizers were found in the products.

The watchdog said in a press release on Friday that around 4 million tons of Turkish agricultural goods imported to Russia in 2008, contained traces of pesticides and nitrates in "amounts substantially exceeding the maximum admitted levels set by Russian law."

Rosselkhoznadzor said it had approached the Turkish agriculture minister urging him to ensure that Russian standards and regulations were observed in Turkish imports to Russia.

The event comes two days after the countries concluded a cooperation agreement in Moscow on Wednesday to boost energy, transport and trade investments.

Under the agreement signed by Turkey's Energy Minister Hilmi Guler and Russia's Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko, the nations are due to collaborate in peaceful nuclear energy projects and are set to launch a train-ferry service in October.
