Police seize 2 kg of heroin in Volga area

MOSCOW, April 27 (RIA Novosti) - Police have seized almost 2 kg of heroin from a drug courier in the city of Naberezhniye Chelny in Russia's Volga republic of Tatarstan, a local police source said on Sunday.

The drug courier driving a Zhiguli car was detained on the city's outskirts on April 27 after a tip-off. The police found 1.758 kilos of heroin in his car, the police source said.

Much of the heroin sold in Russia is trafficked via Tajikistan. The narcotics trade has become an acute problem for the impoverished Central Asian republic due to a continual flow of illegal drugs from neighboring Afghanistan, the world's largest supplier of heroin and opium.
