Indian MPs set out to remove stray dogs from parliament campus

NEW DELHI, April 11 (RIA Novosti) - Indian lawmakers have said they want stray dogs removed from the area around the parliament building for security reasons despite protests by animal rights activists.

Members of the lower house of the Indian parliament claim that the animals wandering around the parliament's cafeteria and begging for food are a threat to people.

It is illegal to kill or put down dogs in India, but sterilization is permitted.

Meanwhile, animal rights activists said the attempts to remove dogs from the parliament campus were senseless and harmful.

"If you remove dogs from territory A, those from territory B will move in," Hiranmay Karlekar, an Indian journalist, said.

India is home to around 20 million dogs of different breeds. In November last year, a 34-year-old man in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu married a dog to rid himself of a curse he believed had been placed upon him for killing two dogs.
