LONDON, March 16 (RIA Novosti) - Large police and army forces locked down Tibetan capital Lhasa after week-long protests against Chinese rule, British TV channel Sky News said on Sunday.

Buddhist monks first took to the streets of Tibet on Monday to mark the 49th anniversary of the 1959 uprising against Chinese rule, which led to the exile of Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. Shops and vehicles were set alight while the number of causalities in clashes between rioters and police still remains uncertain.

According to Sky News, Chinese authorities have set rioters an ultimatum, telling them to hand themselves in to police by Monday midnight or face tough punishment.

Meanwhile, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader has called for an international probe into whether cultural genocide was taking place in Tibet.
