Russian-Kyrgyz trade up 50% in 2007 to $1.2 bln

MOSCOW, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - Trade between Russia and Kyrgyzstan grew 50%, year-on-year, in 2007 to reach a record $1.2 billion, the Central Asian republic's president said on Wednesday.

"The growth of economic cooperation has been significant. In 2006 Kyrgyzstan's trade with Russia was at around $800 million. Last year we saw a level of $1.2 billion," Kurmanbek Bakiyev said in an interview with RIA Novosti and Russia Today.

Kyrgyzstan's foreign trade totaled $3.4 billion in 2007, a 45% increase, year-on-year. Russia remains Kyrgyzstan's main trade partner.

According to the Kyrgyz government, the country's main imports are oil products, coal, cars, equipment, chemical products, and basic metals. The leading exporters to Kyrgyzstan are Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and the United States.

The major export destinations for Kyrgyz goods, in particular agricultural and mining products, are Switzerland, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.
