Russian drug control officer murdered

A Russian Federal Drug Control Service officer and his girlfriend have been killed in the country's southern Rostov Region, a regional law enforcement source told RIA Novosti on Sunday.
ROSTOV-ON-DON, February 17 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Federal Drug Control Service officer and his girlfriend have been killed in the country's southern Rostov Region, a regional law enforcement source told RIA Novosti on Sunday.

"In the early hours of Sunday, the bodies of a colonel of the Federal Drug Control Service department for the city of Aksai and his concubine were discovered in his personal premises," the source said, adding that both bodies bore gunshot wounds and knife injuries.

An investigation is underway.

Last year, over 1.7 metric tons of heroin were seized by Russian narcotics officers, and around 231,000 drug-related crimes were registered, up 9% from 2006 and 32% from 2005.
