TEHRAN, February 16 (RIA Novosti) - A senior adviser to the Iranian president said on Saturday it is against the laws for the Iran Six negotiators to demand that Tehran halts its controversial nuclear program.

The five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany agreed at talks in Berlin on January 22 on a draft for a third sanctions resolution against Iran calling for travel ban, asset freeze and vigilance on all banks in the Islamic Republic.

"What the UN Security Council does today in regard to the Iranian nuclear program is against the laws and is a result of a political pressure," Mojtaba Samareh Hashemi said.

The senior official said that instead of securing and protecting rights of nations the UN Security Council, which according to him is under the pressure from the United States, is violating the rights of Iranian people in the nuclear sector by passing resolutions.

"Our nuclear program activities are peaceful and are still conducted under control of the International Atomic Energy Agency," he said.

The diplomatic standoff between Iran and the West began almost six years ago over suspicions that Tehran's nuclear work is a cover for an atomic weapons program. Since then, two rounds of sanctions have been imposed - in December 2006 and March 2007.

The new set of sanctions stipulates monitoring of activities related to Iranian Bank Melli and Bank Saderat, and mandatory inspection of cargo carried by Iran Air Cargo and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line.

It also contains recommendations for all countries to take caution when developing contacts with Iran, especially in trade and finance.

Tehran continues to insist that it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity and plans to hold tenders for the construction of 19 new nuclear reactors.
