Italian army starts to clean trash from Naples streets

ROME, January 14 (RIA Novosti) - The Italian army has begun a clear-up of tons of garbage which have lined the streets of Naples since December 21, when regional garbage dumps began overflowing, national media said on Monday.

The garbage crisis struck Naples and the surrounding Campania region three weeks ago after garbage collectors stopped gathering waste as there was nowhere to take it.

With the garbage in Naples increasing daily, a total of 60 schools were shut down after the entrances became submerged with tons of uncollected rubbish.

The crisis sparked a wave of protests around the region. In a demonstration, some 1,000 protestors threw rocks, burnt garbage bins and dumped garbage bags near the house of the regional governor.

The region has been plagued by similar incidents for more than a decade. Officials say local bureaucrats and organized crime groups, which make a profit by disposing of waste in illegal dumps, were responsible for the crisis.
