ST. PETERSBURG, January 9 (RIA Novosti) - A court in St. Petersburg ordered on Wednesday former WBA Heavyweight Champion Nikolai Valuyev to pay 130,000 rubles (about $5,300) for assaulting a 61-year-old security guard in January 2006.

The court fined "The Beast from the East" 30,000 rubles, also ordering him to pay 100,000 rubles for moral and physical damages.

According to the boxer, on January 19, 2006, security guard Yury Sergeyev was rude to his wife and used foul language after she had parked illegally outside the Spartak Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, where she had brought their three-year-old son for skating practice. Valuyev said he came to his wife's assistance, and admitting grabbing the guard by the collar. He denied punching him, however.

Sergeyev claimed that Valuyev had hit him, and a doctor from a St. Petersburg hospital said the guard had suffered concussion, bruising to the face, and scratches.

Sergei Solomonov, a lawyer for Valuyev, said his defendant would appeal the decision. The lawyer pointed out that if his client, the largest boxing champion in the history of the sport, standing seven feet tall (2.1 meters), and weighing 324 lbs (147 kilos), had punched the security guard then Sergeyv would have suffered much more than mere bruising and concussion.

Sergeyev's lawyer also said that his client intended to appeal the court's ruling as he deemed the financial compensation awarded insufficient and was also seeking a prison sentence for Valuyev.

Valuyev, 34, became the first Russian world heavyweight champion in December 2005. In April last year he lost his title to Ruslan "White Tyson" Chagayev from Uzbekistan.
