MOSCOW, December 27 (RIA Novosti) - Torrential rains on the Indonesian island of Java have caused numerous landslides and floods, which have killed 94 people in the past three days, the national ANTARA news agency said on Thursday.

A landslide in the Eastern Java province killed 16 on Thursday morning as rains caused widespread flooding, sweeping away homes and causing extensive damage across the island.

On Wednesday, local media reported that at least 78 people had been killed by two landslides in Central Java's Karanganyar and Wonogiri districts.

"This is the worst landslide and flash flood disaster in 40 years," the Bangkok Post newspaper earlier quoted a rescue worker as saying.

Indonesia is frequently hit by natural disasters, with seasonal rains claiming numerous lives in the country, where the vast majority of the population live in mountainous regions and fertile land close to rivers. Experts cite increasing deforestation as a factor with forests helping to prevent landslides and flooding.
