Israel lifts Gaza export restrictions

GAZA, November 21 (RIA Novosti) - Israeli authorities have lifted restrictions on the export of flowers and strawberries from the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian exporters' association spokesman said Wednesday.

He added Israel had given permission for Palestinian farmers to export about two million metric tons of strawberries and 60 million flowers, which will go mainly to Europe.

The Israeli Haaretz newspaper said the decision was made after Palestinian farmers and Israeli exporters appealed to the High Court of Justice against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials, who virtually sealed the border after the Islamist group Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in June.

Israel's Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon is expected to "send details of the decision to Palestinian Authority Agriculture Minister Mahmoud Habash," the newspaper reported.

The borders are expected to open on Sunday or Monday for Palestinian farmers to transport their goods across to Israel.

The newspaper said that all exports from the Gaza Strip "must travel through Israel".

The Palestinian Chamber of Commerce is reported to have said lifting the ban was worth around $14 million to the farmers.

The decision comes weeks before the U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace conference set for November 27 in the U.S. city of Annapolis, Maryland.
