Hamas gunmen open fire during Gaza Arafat rally

GAZA, November 12 (RIA Novosti) - Hamas gunmen have opened fire on a massive opposition Fatah rally in central Gaza, killing at least six protesters and wounding around another 100, local media report.

The rally, which reportedly drew over 250,000 people, was timed to coincide with the third anniversary of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's death, and was planned as a demonstration of opposition to Hamas rule.

The militant Islamist group Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June, following violent clashes with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah.

Hamas spokesmen refused to confirm or deny reports of deaths, saying merely that security forces had come under attack from Fatah gunmen.

On Monday, the Hamas movement rejected the conditions set by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for a dialogue on national reconciliation.
