MOSCOW, October 31 (RIA Novosti) - The crew of a U.S. destroyer provided medical assistance to North Korean sailors injured whilst regaining control of their ship from Somali attackers, Korean news agencies reported on Wednesday.

The crew of USS James E. Williams granted medical help to three North Koreans, wounded in the shootout off Mogadishu, the Somali capital. Medical assistance was first provided on board the Korean vessel, with the sailors subsequently being treated on the U.S. ship for some two hours.

Some seven or eight Somali nationals are reported to have initially seized control of the North Korean sugar freighter on Tuesday. At least one of them was killed when the 22-man North Korean crew later took back their ship by force. U.S sailors also provided medical assistance to Somalis injured in the gun battle.

The surviving pirates are currently being detained on board the North Korean ship.
