Kyrgyz opposition leaders come under fire

BISHKEK, October 26 (RIA Novosti) - Leaders of the Kyrgyz opposition came under fire in a gorge in central Kyrgyzstan on Friday, a spokesman for the socialist Ata-Meken party said.

The incident occurred in the Naryn Region when prominent opposition members, including Omurbek Tekebayev, an outspoken critic of Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, were returning from a party session.

"People in masks opened gunfire and forced our cars to stop. They wanted to take us out of the cars," a party member told RIA Novosti.

Kyrgyz media said the incident was part of an operation carried out by police against criminal groups, and that the "opposition leaders were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time".

Tekebayev, who resigned as a parliament speaker in February 2006, is set to be the lead candidate in the Ata-Meken candidate list in the country's December 16 parliamentary elections.

Ata-Meken is the main rival to Ak-Zhol, the main pro-presidential party.
