MOSCOW, October 25 (RIA Novosti) - The European Court of Human Rights awarded 10,000 euros to jailed Russian businessman Platon Lebedev in compensation for his arrest, but Moscow said it would appeal.

The Strasbourg court said on its Web site Thursday that five violations had been found concerning the detention of Lebedev, a former top manager at the Russian oil company Yukos, declared bankrupt in 2006.

"The Court awarded Mr Lebedev 3,000 euros in respect of non-pecuniary damages and 7,000 euros legal costs," the court said.

The Russian Justice Ministry said it would appeal against the Strasbourg Court ruling. "The Russian Federation will apply its right and appeal against this decision, asking for the case to be handed over to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights," a ministry spokeswoman told Russia's Channel One.

Last year, Russia paid around 12.5 million rubles ($502,000) in compensation following Strasbourg court decisions.

Russia has cooperated with the European Court of Human Rights since May 1998, and the court has upheld around 200 out of 47,000 claims filed by Russian nationals. The court has also refused compensation awards in 19 cases.

Lebedev, former head of the Menatep Group, and his business partner Mikhail Khodorkovsky were found guilty of tax evasion and large-scale fraud by a Moscow court in May 2005 and sentenced to nine years in prison. Later the Moscow City Court reduced their terms to eight years.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office charged him with laundering 450 billion rubles ($18 billion) and $7.5 billion from 1998 to 2004. Lebedev has maintained his innocence throughout.
