Uzbek national stabbed to death in Moscow

MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - An Uzbek national has been stabbed to death in the east of Moscow, a local police spokesman said on Monday.

On Sunday evening, two assailants of Slavic appearance attacked a 37-year-old man, stabbing him in the back, chest and neck, in the Izmailovo district of the Russian capital. Investigators ruled out robbery as a motive for the killing, as the attackers failed to take 10,000 rubles ($400) from the victim, who died at the scene.

A criminal investigation has been launched, and police are currently studying video footage taken from a surveillance camera installed on a neighboring building.

Investigators also found two knives at the scene. They are now trying to find out more about the victim's background and occupation, and have not ruled out that the murder was racially motivated.

In recent years, non-whites have been frequently attacked in apparently racially motivated crimes in Russia. Some of the worst Russian cities for racist attacks are Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the central Russian city of Voronezh.

"Racist attacks happen with shocking regularity in Russia, and the government is shirking its responsibilities, and failing to confront the problem," Amnesty International said in a report on racial hate in Russia in 2006.

On Saturday evening, one Tajik national was killed and another seriously injured after being attacked by a group of young people armed with baseball bats and knives in southwest Moscow.
