No change needed

Recent government reshuffle not meant to alter foreign policy. It is little wonder that no change has been made in the parts of the Russian government that oversee foreign policy and security.

No one predicted that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would lose his job and some uncertainty remained over whether Putin would accept the resignation of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who had tendered his resignation after his father-in-law, Viktor Zubkov, was appointed prime minister.

The fact that Putin kept both men on the job indicates that the president is happy with the performance of his foreign policy team. And indeed, judging by opinion polls, most Russians give high marks to Putin's handling of foreign policy. But this does not necessarily mean that no change is warranted and that the exact same course will be followed by the person who will succeed Putin in May 2008.
