JAKARTA, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - Hundreds of fish are believed to have been deliberately poisoned at Malaysia's largest aquarium, the country's national news agency Bernama said Wednesday.
Underwater World Langkawi's deputy general manager Mohd Hafizuddin Abdullah said about 600 fish of 50 species, including sharks, stingrays, and barracudas, were found dead late on Monday.
An investigation is underway and the police are trying to discover the type of poison used, believed to be petroleum-based.
"We smelt petrol near the tanks and believe it was the work of more than one person," - the agency quotes Langkawi Police Chief, Supt Mohamad Ali Jamaluddin, as saying.
Underwater World Langkawi holds a large collection of aquatic life with more than 5000 fish and other sea creatures housed in 117 specially designed tanks.
