Russia, U.S. to conduct joint naval exercises Sept. 28-30

Two U.S. Navy combat ships will arrive September 24 in the port of Vladivostok in Russia's Far East to participate in joint maneuvers with the Russian Navy, Russia's Pacific Fleet spokesman said Saturday.
VLADIVOSTOK, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - Two U.S. Navy combat ships will arrive September 24 in the port of Vladivostok in Russia's Far East to participate in joint maneuvers with the Russian Navy, Russia's Pacific Fleet spokesman said Saturday.

The exercises, dubbed Pacific Eagle-2007, will be held September 28-30 and will include mine-sweeping and anti-submarine operations, an interception of a vessel trespassing territorial waters and a sea-rescue operation.

"It is the third meeting of the Russian and American sailors this year, which has two goals - further development of naval cooperation in thee Asia-Pacific region and the joint naval exercises Pacific Eagle-2007," the spokesman said.

The U.S. Navy has dispatched an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82) and a minesweeper USS Patriot (MCM 7) to participate in the upcoming maneuvers.

Russia is represented by an Udaloy-class destroyer Admiral Panteleyev.
