Russian SPS opposition leader reelected

MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - The leader of the Union of Right Forces (SPS), Nikita Belykh, was reelected Friday at a party congress, an SPS spokesman said.

Belykh's reelection was approved by 124 of the 140 delegates.

Belykh, 32, was first elected leader of the SPS in March, 2005, succeeding Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister.

The SPS is an opposition party which supports Western-style capitalism. It is strongly associated with the largely disastrous Yeltsin-era free market reforms and privatization. In the 2003 parliamentary elections, the party failed to reach the 5% threshold needed to take up seats in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.
