Peru's ex-president Fujimori loses extradition fight in Chile

SANTIAGO, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - Chile's Supreme Court has ruled that Peru's former president, Alberto Fujimori, must be extradited to Lima, where he is accused of human rights abuses and corruption, Chilean media reported Friday.

Fujimori, 69, has been fighting extradition ever since he flew from Japan to Chile in 2005. He is currently under house arrest after spending six months in a Chilean jail. He made the trip in an unsuccessful attempt to return to Peru to run in last year's presidential elections.

In 2003, after being presented with relevant information by Peru's Supreme Court, Interpol issued an international arrest order for Fujimori on murder charges.

The ruling, which is final and allows no further appeals, comes as a surprise, not least to Fujimori. The ruling reverses an earlier decision by a Chilean judge, who said Peru had not presented enough evidence to support the charges.

The human rights charges date from the 1990s, from Peru's campaign against the Maoist Shining Path group. Fujimori is accused of sanctioning murders by death squads, in particular the massacres at Barrios Altos and La Cantuta, in 1991 and 1992 respectively, in which a total of 25 people were killed.

Fujimori, who is the son of Japanese immigrants, led Peru from 1990 to 2000. He fled the country amid a corruption scandal, initially flying to Japan, where he holds dual nationality and was immune from extradition.

He denies both the corruption and human rights abuse charges.
