NAZRAN, September 17 (RIA Novosti) - Unknown assailants shot dead a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officer and wounded his associate in the southern republic of Ingushetia, a law enforcement official said Monday.
"The attack was carried out about 6:15 p.m. Moscow time on the Kavkaz federal highway... The FSB major and his associate were shot as they left Vainakh cafe," the source said.
The source said the dead FSB officer could be the younger brother of the former Ingush prosecutor.
An investigation is underway.
The volatile province has seen a surge in militant attacks against police and civilians in recent months. Random fighting and terrorist attacks also occur in neighboring Chechnya, devastated by two Moscow-led military campaigns against separatist regimes in the 1990s- early 2000s.
