MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - Rescuers have discovered the bodies of two Russian tourists in a canyon in northwestern China, a Russian Emergencies Ministry spokesman said Saturday.

The team of Russian and Chinese rescuers is continuing to search for the other four tourists.

The group of six Russian sportsmen set off August 22 for a canoe trip down the Yurungkax River, a remote area in the Kunlun Mountains, one of the longest mountain chains in Asia, but they failed to turn up as scheduled on September 2.

The Chinese Xinhua news agency said Friday that eight Chinese rescuers arrived at the spot where the belongings of the six missing Russian tourists in Xinjiang were found Wednesday. Russian rescuers have been active in the area since Monday.

Earlier, Xinhua quoted a local Russian-language interpreter as saying the Russian sportsmen might have been swept away by landslides or fallen victim to bandits who operate in the area. The agency said the youngest missing tourist was 25 and the oldest 47.

On September 6 the Russian Canoe Federation requested help from the Russian embassy in China in finding the missing sportsmen, and over 1,000 rescuers have been searching the area.
