ROSTOV-ON-DON, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - The security service of Ingushetia in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region on Sunday rejected the reports of a militants' attack on the interior department in the Ingush city of Karabulak.

A republican police source said earlier Sunday that police were battling gunmen who had attacked the Karabulak interior department.

"There was no attack. There was a street shootout in the city. We are currently investigating the causes for the shootout," a spokesman for the republican security service said.

At the same time, a source in the republic's interior bodies said that a resident of Karabulak was killed after a group of armed men attacked him.

"The personnel of the Karabulak interior department arrived at the scene several minutes after that to find out the circumstances. As a result, a shootout occurred between the armed men and the interior department personnel," the source said, adding that several people had been detained.

The source did not rule out that the shootout could have occurred between the republic's different law-enforcement agencies.
