Russia repays debt to Portugal - Finance Ministry source

MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Finance Ministry source said Thursday the country had repaid its debt to Portugal ahead of schedule.

"The debt was repaid last Friday," the source said, without revealing the amount or form of the repayment.

Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Storchak earlier said the Russian debt to Portugal exceeded $81 million.

Portugal was left off a protocol on Russia's debt to the Paris Club of creditor nations, which was repaid last year, and the official said at the time that talks were underway to deliver Russian Be-200 aircraft to the country as a debt swap.

The payment covers Russia's debt until 2020, and the country thereby saves on interest payments over 13 years.

Another ministry spokesperson said the sum paid totaled $83.56 million, including $80.7 million in early repayment and $2.47 million in interest on the main debt.

"A total of $26.1 million has been saved because there is no longer a need to pay interest," the source said.
