Chechnya was devastated by two military campaigns in 1994-1996 and 1999-2001, after which Moscow significantly scaled down its military presence in the republic. However, sporadic fighting and militant attacks continue in the region.
On August 8, two policemen were killed by militants in a gunfire attack on a street in Grozny.
On July 23 one federal soldier was killed and another wounded in a battle between units of the Vostok battalion and a group of about 15 militants in the Vedeno district, southern Chechnya.
