GROZNY, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - A policeman was shot outside a police station in Grozny by an unidentified militant and died in hospital, local police said Wednesday.

Late on Tuesday evening a gunman in a Zhiguli (Lada) car fired several shots at the gates to the police station, wounding an officer. He was taken to hospital and died a few hours later. A search for the militant is underway.

Chechnya was devastated by two military campaigns in 1994-1996 and 1999-2001, after which Moscow significantly scaled down its military presence in the republic. However, sporadic fighting and militant attacks continue in the region.

On August 8, two policemen were killed by militants in a gunfire attack on a street in Grozny.

On July 23 one federal soldier was killed and another wounded in a battle between units of the Vostok battalion and a group of about 15 militants in the Vedeno district, southern Chechnya.
