TALLINN, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - A new checkpoint has been opened on the coastal end of Russia's border with Estonia, to replace an outdated border-control building, Estonia's frontier department said Tuesday.

The new checkpoint near Estonia's Baltic port of Narva-Joesuu will improve border control and facilitate rescue operations, the department said. The old building is undergoing renovation.

The checkpoint's construction was financed by the European Union, which allocated about 1.7 million euros ($2.3 million) under the Schengen Facility program.

The new two-storey building includes accommodation for border guards, a detention center, and other facilities.
