Early elections in Poland to be held in fall

WARSAW, August 9 (RIA Novosti) - Poland's president and the opposition leader agreed during a four-hour meeting Thursday that early parliamentary elections would be held this October to end the political crisis in the country.

Poland's parliament has been locked in a standoff between the ruling Law and Justice Party led by President Lech Kaczynski's twin brother, Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, and two smaller parties in the coalition.

"The elections will be held in fall, most likely in October," said Donald Tusk, head of the largest opposition party Civic Platform, after his meeting with the president.

The political unrest erupted after the president dismissed Andrzej Lepper, deputy premier and agriculture minister, on corruption allegations in early July at the prime minister's request. Lepper's Self Defense party responded by quitting the ruling coalition.

Polish daily Nasz Dziennik said in late July that the lower house of parliament would convene August 22 after the summer break and make a decision on self-dissolution.
