BRUSSELS, August 2 (RIA Novosti) - Fires which have swept through Europe since the beginning of the year have already destroyed 3,376 square kilometers (337,600 hectares) of forests in EU member states, the European Commission said Thursday, citing data from the EU's fire information system.

The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) said most of the fires were registered in July, and 2,229 square kilometers (222,900 hectares) of all burned forests were in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Italy.

EFFIS said that last summer fires in southwest Europe destroyed 3,585 square kilometers (358,500 hectares) of woodland.
