British tourist bites Greek policeman, sentenced to more than year in jail

ATHENS, August 2 (RIA Novosti) - A British tourist who viciously bit a Greek policeman in a drunken rage has been given a 14-month jail sentence, local media reported Thursday.

The incongruously named Warren Christopher Manners is said to have been drinking hard late into the night at a bar in the tourist resort of Faliraki a week ago Monday. When he emerged in a drunken stupor and began accosting passersby, a local police patrol tried to calm him down.

Instead of complying, Manners verbally abused the officers and attacked them physically. As they were trying to subdue him, he savagely bit one policeman on the hip, an offense that earned him a 14-month sentence when he appeared before a Greek magistrate Wednesday evening.

British tourists are notorious for their rowdy antics abroad, and were recently named by popular acclaim in an opinion poll the world's worst behaved tourists.

Last year, British hooligans were involved in several mass altercations in Greece, including an all-out street brawl on Crete. And this year, local residents of the island staged a demonstration to protest the situation and demand that authorities do something about the boorish excess.
