ST. PETERSBURG, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - A plane bound from St. Petersburg to Turkey was forced to return to Pulkovo airport after drunken passengers started a fight on board, transport police said Friday.

"On Thursday, at 17.05 Moscow time, Pulkovo airport police received a report that passengers were fighting on board a charter flight bound for Dalaman. The flight attendants on the plane were unable to stop the fight, so the crew decided to return to Pulkovo," the police press service said.

Three men, who had been drinking before and after takeoff, ended up fighting with other passengers, after one of the men was given the cold shoulder by a young female he had been trying to chat up. After the brush-off the man struck the young woman in the face and when another passenger tried to defend her, a brawl started, which the flight crew was unable to control.

The three young people were arrested and could face lawsuits from the airline worth tens of thousands of dollars for losses caused by the aircraft being forced to return to St. Petersburg. The male who assaulted the woman could face up to three months in custody.
