Kyrgyz special services deny China involved in spy scandal

BISHKEK, July 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Chinese intelligence service is not connected with a woman arrested on suspicion of spying in Kyrgyzstan last month, the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security said Thursday.

Last month Kyrgyz national security services reported that on June 19 they had arrested a woman, who worked for the Kyrgyz parliamentary press office, after catching her trying to pass sensitive information to a foreign intelligence agent.

Local media circulated reports that the arrested woman, Zhaparkul Arykova, was hired by and worked for Chinese intelligence.

"Chinese special services are not connected with this incident," the security committee said in a statement. "Kyrgyz and Chinese special services enjoy and maintain traditionally friendly relations, have established and continue to develop close cooperation, particularly in the fight against international terrorism and extremism."

"An investigation will establish which external special service or organization is connected with the illegal activities of the parliamentary staff member and the foreigner arrested; and the court will determine whether they are guilty or not," the statement said.

Karganbek Samakov, the chair of the interparliamentary relations committee, also said earlier that the woman had links with China, and that she had been divulging secrets to Chinese agents for several years before being caught red-handed.
