MOSCOW, June 28 (RIA Novosti) - A U.S. court has acquitted a former Russian nuclear energy minister charged with diverting funds allocated by Washington to enhance the safety of Soviet-era nuclear power plants, his lawyer said Thursday.
The Federal Court of Pittsburg cleared Yevgeny Adamov of embezzlement charges, dismissing prosecutors' allegations that he misappropriated $9 million from nuclear safety allocations by transferring it to his accounts in the United States, defense attorney Henri Reznik said.
According to Reznik, the court said the money, intended for a research institute headed by Adamov, had been transferred to the U.S. to protect it from the risks of the ailing financial system of the Russia of the early 1990s.
