TEL AVIV, June 20 (RIA Novosti) - Israel has allowed a shipment of humanitarian aid into Gaza for the first time since sealing borders with the enclave, following its takeover by Islamist group Hamas, the country's military said.

Twenty-two containers with 200 tons of food and 30 tons of medication were delivered to the chaotic region Tuesday through the Kerem-Shalom border crossing, reopened by Israelis to allow humanitarian supplies to pass.

The 1.5 million population of the battered coastal strip depends for survival almost entirely on supplies delivered through Israel.

Israel shut down all major crossings with Gaza last week to prevent a spillover of fighting between Hamas and the rival pro-presidential Fatah movement.

Five Gazan civilians with gun wounds were taken for treatment to Israeli hospitals on Tuesday. Two of the patients had been caught in the crossfire in a shootout between Hamas fighters and Israeli security forces at the Erez checkpoint, in northern Gaza.

Hundreds of Palestinians desperate to flee from Gaza to the Fatah-controlled West Bank, separated from the crowded costal strip by about 50 kilometers (30 miles) of Israeli territory, have already spent several nights in a tunnel at the Erez checkpoint, blocked by Israeli troops. Currently, only staff of international organizations are allowed to cross.
