ST. PETERSBURG, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin highlighted Russia's role in global energy security as he bestowed energy science awards Saturday on a Russian, a Briton and an Icelander during an economic forum in St. Petersburg.

"Secure energy supply directly impacts the economic success of nations and the quality of life of millions," he said.

"Russia intends to do even more to support energy innovation, environmental safety, energy efficiency and supply," Putin said.

"That explains why these issues topped the agenda of Russia's G8 presidency, and why they were taken over by the German one," the Russian leader said.

The 30-million ruble ($1.16-million) award will be shared equally between the three winners, out of 146 applicants.

The Global Energy award has been bestowed by the Global Energy Foundation annually since 2003 for theoretical as well as experimental and applied research in energy science. It is focused on energy efficiency, heat conservation, alternative energy sources and new power-generation technologies.

Russia's Vladimir Nakaryakov and Briton Geoffrey Hewitt received the award for research into the physics of heat, while the Icelandic winner, Thorstein Sigfusson, was recognized for introducing hydrogen propulsion to his country's transportation sector.
